Lenses

I do not own that many lenses really, but those I do own are more than capable of producing amazing results!

My Fujinon XF 35mm F/2 R WR is my current favourite lens for self portrait photography, and it is simply the most gorgeous lens I have ever had the pleasure to own. It gives a 52mm equivalent in 35mm terms, so is the perfect lens for general portraits, it is not too wide, but not too tight either, it is perfect I think!

The Fujinon XC 16-50mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 OIS lens is perfect when I want to include a wider perspective, to include my environment in my images, and do not require the shallow depth of field that I get with my 35mm F/2 lens.

The Canon 90-300mm zoom lens is my current wildlife lens, and being over 15 years old this lens certainly still does a good job of giving crisp images.

Accessories

To keep all the gear clean, I have a LensPen cleaning kit, which consists of various pen styled cleaners, brushes, a rocket blower and lens cloths, which is always in use specially when working outdoors in less than desirable weather.

I also take a few ND filters with me, Cokin A series filters, which are handy for landscapes should I need them, and of course I have many spare batteries for my Fuji X-E2 camera.

Lighting

I primarily use video lights for my shoots, simply because of their simplicity and convenience, not only are they dirt cheap, they are reliable and robust, and throw a fairly decent amount of light out for their size and power.

These are Samitan branded video lights bought on Amazon for as little as 25 GBP.

I own quite a few speedlights, which consist of Yongnuo YN560III's and Yongnuo YN460II's, all together thats 6 speedlights in one bag, as well as a Bowens mount snoot, with one speedlight tucked away inside of it to make the most of the empty space inside. I have also recently bought an Amazon Basics DF500 speedlight for only 25GBP, which is the cheapest speedlight that has tilt and swivel as well as some reasonable output.

These are all kept in my Lowepro if I am doing a location self portrait photoshoot, and my camera will go into my Billingham bag, and all these fit into an old ladies shopping trolley, which transports my gear perfectly!

I also have a load of AA batteries fully charged and ready to go at all times, with a mixture of really cheap Chinese ones and Duracell Duralock batteries, which the latter is amazing and seem to last longer than they possibly should.

My speedlight gels are also inside this bag, along with mini softboxes and Yongnuo YN560TX triggers and Yongnuo RF603c triggers, which are used to trigger my speedlights.

Along with all these speedlights, I have a lightstand for every one of them, along with octoboxes, softboxes, a beautydish and lightstand brackets, which all go into a shopping trolley should I need to take them all out with me.

Smartphone

I use a Huawei Y9II smartphone, which has 2GB RAM and a 128GB memory card within, and I use this phone to connect to my X-E2 via wifi for remote tethered shooting, and is vital to ensuring I nail the focus in my self portraits!

Let me get one thing straight right now, it is not about the gear you use, it is not about the camera you use, camera's do not take photographs, we do, people take the photographs, so whether its an iphone or top of the range DSLR camera, anyone with good intentions can create beautiful, memorable self portraits that need not be the typically cheesy facebook profile style photo with obligatory duck faced lips going on. Look for the gear that works for you, and stick with it, the results can be astounding even from a very basic compact camera
