Growth Mindset vs . Fixed Mindset
Sally had a " fixed mindset " that she was smart , however , she was shocked when she started geng low grades . She thought she was smart , but the world had told her otherwise . This may sound like an extreme example , but 50 % of students at Harvard have been reported to struggle with depression , while 25 % of them have life-threatening depression .
Now , our third student is Jack . Jack was raised by parents who said he could do well if he works hard . There was no smart Jack or stupid Jack . There was a Jack that could do well if he works hard . Parents were very careful not to label Jack . The parents always said to Jack that if he works hard , he can be successful in life .
That ' s why Jack succeeded in life because he works well . Instead of saying “ I ' m stupid ” aer setbacks or “ I ' m smart ” aer his successes , he thought “ I didn ' t work hard in the first case , but in the second case I worked well ”. If you want to be successful in life , you have to make an effort , work hard . This is an example of " Growth mindset ".
The mindset of the first two , Jack and Sally , is called " fixed mindset ." Jack has a " growth mindset ". You can probably guess which of these two mentality types is beer . As parents , it is very important to create a " growth mindset " structure in our children . You can tell kids they are smart or stupid , but life will tell them very different things . This turns their world upside down .
Let ' s summarize the differences between the " growth mindset " and " fixed mindset ".
Those with a " fixed mindset " believe that intelligence is stac , that is , it cannot be developed . People with a " growth mindset " believe that intelligence can be developed . This situaon leads to a desire to learn in them .
