A Home in a hole
Digging a hole in the ground is not as easy
as it seems, have you ever tried?. For some
animals, that is their life's work.
Motmots are a type of bird that makes
nests underground to conceal its eggs.
With its legs and beak dig into the
mountain walls to create a tunnel with a
room at the end. They are not the only
ones using underground shelters: toads
and tarantulas also use holes to sleep
during the day. That´s a safe and silent
place for them. So, if you see a hole, you
are in front of someone's home, don´t
disturb!.
Rufous motmot
Baryphthengus martii
Did you know…the momotos tunnels can
be 1 to 5 m long, and often have extreme
curves. In Tirimbina since 2015 we studied
the nesting of these and other birds.
