support your neighbors
By Christopher Harris Editor
Small businesses are the backbone of Pulaski County — and really , any community like it across the country .
In a world where big corporate brands and faceless entities seem unavoidable , there is still a place in our society for the little guy . For the business that starts with little more than a few bucks in one ’ s pocket and a dream . For the “ mom and pop ” shop , and businesses that are passed down from one family generation to the next .
Those are the businesses we celebrate in this month ’ s edition of Southeast Kentucky Life magazine — the small ones . The family-owned ones . The ones where you recognize the person behind the counter , and know that they ’ re part of this community just like you are .
We learn about the Davis and Sears families and their rich heritage of business success in this area , and about The Rex , a restaurant serving Nancy started by one of Pulaski ’ s most familiar faces .
Read about the inspiring comeback story of several businesses that have risen from the ashes of a devastating fire to start anew .
Take a look inside Paul ’ s Discount , one of Pulaski ’ s most enduring locally-grown retail locations , and a unique entertainment venue that could only be described as “ sharp .”
All this and more , including valuable information for Men ’ s Health Month and an inspiriting story of one man ’ s effort to choose a healthier life with the help of bariatric surgery , is available inside the June issue of Southeast Kentucky Life . You might be reading it inside your favorite local small business today ! We encourage you to shop local and support your neighbors doing their best to earn a living serving their community !
