About 80 percent of the stomach is removed during the procedure , leaving a cylindrical or “ sleeve ” shaped stomach about the size of a hotdog . Stearns said it was about a three-month timeframe from deciding to seek help from the Cumberland Bariatric Institute until actually having the procedure , which his insurance covered .
Stearns says the procedure only lasted about half an hour and he stayed at the hospital just one night .
Post-surgery , Stearns says they do regular labs at CBI to monitor his health . “ I have appointments every three months to check on progress and see if I need anything ,” he said .
“ I take vitamins every day and the biggest focus is on protein ,” he explained .
“ I feel so much better ,” he said since having the procedure . “ I actually wake up with energy ,” he said .
Stearns says those around him noticed his weight loss and have shown concern and support for him , including his primary care physician — Dr . James Brown at LCMA .
Choosing Dr . Eid for the procedure was easy for Stearns . “ Since I work there ( LCRH ) I already knew him and knew he had good post-op care ,” Stearns said . “ That was really important to know that if I needed anything , he ’ d be there for me .”
As part of his work as a registered nurse at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital , Stearns said he had taken care of sleeve patients and knew what to expect going in as a patient .
Stearns encourages anyone who is considering bariatric surgery to speak with the Cumberland Bariatric Institute or to speak with someone who has been through it . “ I ’ ve had several people who have been interested in it come and talk to me about it ,” he said .
“ It ’ s one of those things that ’ s a lifestyle change ,” he explained . “ It ’ s not just diet . You basically have to adhere to it to be successful .”
“ I ’ ve seen the toll being obese takes on people ,” Stearns says of being motivated to embrace his new lifestyle and shed 127 pounds .
