The biggest addition the Kecks are making to Paul ’ s Discount should be ready in the fall when their indoor gun range opens .
Brooke , a Laurel County native , brought up to Michael the idea of adding the gun range when they were looking at purchasing the business two years ago because Somerset did not have a facility like that , something she grew up with in Laurel County
“ My Papaw ran a fishing and shooting game club so growing up I was always on the shooting range with him and my uncles ,” she said . “ So this is something that I am really passionate about , wanting to bring it into the community for people to enjoy as a recreational thing , as a learning opportunity and just as something that the community can really enjoy and there is nothing like that in this community .”
Another reason for the gun range Brooke said was to provide a place to teach women in the area how to protect themselves .
“ A lot of women are afraid of learning to shoot a gun because they don ’ t have a place to do it , or have people to properly teach them gun safety ,” she said . “ So one of my passions for this is to be able to teach women of all ages how to safely and properly operate a hand gun for their safety and protection . Women should know how to properly protect themselves .”
For more than 60 years , Paul ’ s Discount has attracted customers from all across the Lake Cumberland region and Michael said his plan is for it to continue .
“ Paul ’ s has always been and still is a regional hub and we want that to continue for another bunch of decades ,” he said . “ That ’ s our aim , community supporting community . Paul ’ s has been around now for 64 years and our heart is for there to be another 60-plus years . We want this store to survive Brooke and I and to on to another generation .”
Paul ’ s Discount ’ s motto for years has been “ If we don ’ t have it , you don ’ t need it ” and that ’ s still true today .
Paul ’ s is located at 1616 Ky . 2227 , just off U . S . 27 , half a mile from SomerSplash water park .
