As summer vacation draws to a close many parents are making doctor ’ s appointments for sports physicals or yearly check-ups before their children return to school . During this hectic time of planning , it may be easy to overlook skin conditions that might have come from the extra time outdoors .
“ Pool usage can often flare up childhood eczema , as the chlorine in the pools can irritate the skin somewhat ,” Braun said , adding that rinsing with fresh tap water after finishing at the pool can be helpful for the condition . “ Also , being diligent to continue using sun protection later in the summer may be more difficult than in the spring . There ’ s a false assumption that because a tan has occurred that sun damage is not possible . In fact , [ ultraviolet ] mediated sun damage can occur in spite of a suntan , and the effects may not be seen for years or decades .”
Another skin issue that parents should keep an eye out for is sunscreen allergy
from “ chemical sunscreens ” that contain oxybenzone or avobenzone .
“ For this reason , we typically recommend use of sunscreens whose main ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide ,” Braun said , adding that these types of sunscreens are commonly labeled as “ mineral sunscreens .”
Braun said he has also treated sun sensitive rashes , such as polymorphous light eruption , which although uncommon shows up “ after a burst of sunlight and can produce itchy small bumps that coalesce on the arms and face .”
Another common occurrence for children who have been playing outside around trees or in tall grass are tick bites . Braun suggests parents do a close inspection of their child for these tiny blood suckers to avoid adverse skin reactions from these bites .
Eczema , which can be mistaken for psoriasis , as well as acne , are big concerns for school aged children and teens and Braun has some tips to help keep the skin
healthy and happy . “ With acne prevalence , being sure to wash your face with a gentle non-scented cleanser every day , and after exercising is one tip that can really help facial skin ,” Braun said . “ If prone to dry skin , using a non-scented emollient cream , rather than lotion , especially within two to three minutes after showering or bathing is one way to prevent eczema breakouts and itchy skin .”
Skin care isn ’ t just important for adults who are looking to stave off the effects of aging . It ’ s something that should be started early in life and with the school year starting it gives children and parents a chance to work this healthy habit into their daily routine .
“ Good habits are hard to build , especially when one feels the invincibility of youth ,” Braun said . “ I would encourage our students to be caring for the skin , as well as the whole body , because you ’ ve only been given one body and it is a gift worth caring for .”
