Somerset High School . The Academy focuses on a liberal arts approach to instill Andrew Carnegie ’ s four major pillars of success : initiative , enthusiasm , imagination , and purpose . The Carnegie Academy ’ s mission is to encourage and assist motivated students who want to experience a challenging collegiate setting while accruing college credits via Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses . The Carnegie Academy , is challenging but these challenges help ensure students are successful in their future academic and career goals .
We also have students involved with DECA , FCCLA , and JAG programs , all of which shine at state and national competitions . These academic offerings , along with our extracurricular activities , provide Somerset Independent students with a well-rounded education and opportunities to experience success , which in turn increases confidence .
Finally , Hopkins Elementary and Somerset High School are both high performing schools according to the Kentucky Department of Education Accountability System . Students at the elementary level scored well above the state average in reading , math , and science . At the high school , social studies scores were significantly above the state average . Somerset High School is also ranked as a top 25 high school in Kentucky on an annual basis . We utilize the data obtained from the state assessment to support each individual student ’ s academic growth and to progress each child toward becoming a successful and productive citizen .

We offer a variety of educational settings in which instructors provide quality instruction to support students in their academic achievements . Our most recent diagnostic data has shown high growth at all levels , above state averages for growth .
I believe one important aspect of education is the opportunities in which students can participate . At the high school level , we offer a wide selection of Advanced Placement ( AP ) and dual credit courses , allowing students to earn college credit while they ’ re still in high school . We offer numerous career and technical courses , leading to industry certifications in high school , and setting students on pathways to in-demand careers . We coordinate more than a hundred internship and apprenticeship placements , so students can explore future career options and support our local businesses in the process .
We believe that the vast majority of students should continue education after high school , whether it ’ s college , trade school , or on-the-job training . As civilization advances , there ’ s an increasing need for specialized , technical , and skills-based training , and high school sets the foundation for these pursuits .
We also work diligently to ensure that struggling students get the support they need to be academically successful , identifying barriers and assisting students to overcome them . We provide after-school tutoring , in-school academic interventions , and often coordinate social and emotional and mental health supports in collaboration with community partners .
The hard work of our students , teachers , and school administrators is evidenced in our annual state test scores , where for more than a decade we have ranked among the topachieving school districts in Kentucky .
