XIA QINGFENG
Beijing Academy is a demonstration site for education reform in Chaoyang District, China. Mr. Xia Qingfeng is the Academy's first principal.
Once the pupils had acted out the story of Little Red Riding Hood, they worked in pairs to create a ‘Story Map’, using pictures to recall the events of the story. The Chinese pupils had not done this before but worked wonderfully together and produced some impressive work.
This week's teacher education is focused on reading. We all know reading is important, yet we do not give it the immediate attention. Teachers today are no longer the primary source of knowledge because children access information from many mediums outside the classroom.
What should we do facing our changng roles, how do we as educators continue to inspire children to think? We cannot stay satisfied with merely passing down the information. To influence children's minds, we need to be constantly improving ourselves.
Some say that an understanding of wordly wisdom is true learning. To live, to experience, and to reflect is indeed important, but not never enough as an excuse to not read.
Reading is something that can overcome all time and space barriers, expanding your world infinitely. Life goes on without books, but the difference will begin to show eventually. We are required by our profession to read and to learn. What is needed right now is to simply to pick up a book, start reading and continue to read.
