A: Absolutely, but those same intrinsic values have to be there… they need to come from and continually be spurred on by somebody.
A: More open and engaging topics. Teachers need to steer away from work and assessments that are rote and linear. Watching a 45 minute long narrated powerpoint video is no better than a live boring powerpoint lecture given in class. With the opportunity of the infinite internet, collaboration, communication, tools and resources - we should be taking advantage of that. Students should be given some direction and then be free to explore and create as they see fit with some relatively flexible guidance.
A: I would love to sit down and learn C++ and / or PHP but I have not had the time to do it… the real focus that it takes to master the more complex languages. I have also tried to learn Spanish multiple times as well and have failed miserably, I think computer languages are the same for me.
To learn a foreign language successfully, I believe I would need to be dropped off in that country and forced to learn - complete immersion, and some complex languages (like C++) I believe would require the same type of dedication and immersion from me.
Q: In a self-paced online course, what elements need to go into the design to encourage user engagement?

A: Once in edit mode, you can drag and drop files and TEXT straight into your course instead of having to go through the regular ‘add activity’ option - give it a try, its pretty cool!
