Sea Level Rising June 2015 June 2015 | Page 3

The Issue:

Melting Ice:

Some people dont believe that melting ice is contributed to the sea level rising but they dont realize that its the land based ice that contibutes the most. The two main contributers to the ice melt are Antarctica and Greenland which has lost a severe amount glaciers and ice caps in the last 10 years. The rising temperature has increased the amount of melted ice in the summer and has slowed the reforming of the ice during the winter. Once the ice has melted on the land it creates holes in the ice and small tunnels under the ice has the water flowing directly into the ocean. This procces causes more ice to slip off the land and into the warming sea for it to melt. In the past four decades, land based ice melting has contributed to about 1/3 of the issue.(NRDC, 2015)

Other Factors:

Other factors have less impact then the melting ice or thermal expansion but still contribute. Some effects can be regional instead of world wide for example: changes in wind patterns, ocean currents, water temperature, subsidence as well as ocean salinity levels. The Gulf of Mexico has warmer water temperatures, along with the land slowly sinking, this causes water to move inland which strengthens ocean currents.(Gidman, 2014) In this region, sea levels have risen around 8 inches and will continue to rise unless we make a change.
