In 1878, Sidney Lanier was so moved
by the beauty of Georgia’s marshes
that he immortalized them in a poem
titled “The Marshes of Glynn.” To this
day, residents and visitors to the area
experience that same inspiration,
each excursion into the marshes, onto
the beach or through the waves of the
Atlantic. Sea Island now offers fun and
educational avenues of exploration,
including Eco Tours with a naturalist.
The tours start with a short presentation
of what to expect, then participants are

out more about Sea Island’s animals,
plants and various ecosystems. The
tours conclude with shelling on the

Sea Island Shooting School was one of the
remains one of the oldest original buildings
on the island. Celebrating 85 years of tradition, the school continues to introduce beginners to the joy and satisfaction found in clay
target sports while emphasizing gun safety
and proper instruction. The school’s instructors—Jon, Jeff, Jake and Jimmy—have more
than 60 years of teaching experience among
them and pride themselves on providing
the best possible lessons and activities
for every skill level. Among the programs
is for kids ages 6 to 12, Targets for Teens
introduces teenagers to equipment, gun
safety and technique, and the Annie Oakley
women. Practice sessions are also available
by appointment for experienced shooters.
