The theme of misanthropy came along as we started ge ng more into darker and more dissonant style of death metal, cliché themes of gore, or scien st space lyrics doesn ' t really fit this style in my opinion. The music on the album is both brutal and introspec ve, so exploring the darkest sides of the human psyche is, in my opinion, more appropriate. The darkest visions of all are within the human mind.
6 We will talk about the past of the band, tell us the Ep and the demo " GORY DEFILEMENT " and INFATUATION WITH DEFORMITY " How were things with the distribu on of the press with previous work?
The old stuff was basically just used to get local shows, so it was never released as such, only some CD-R copies we made ourselves. Gory Defilement is a pre y rough produc on, with some straigh orward Suffoca on worship. The Art of Slaughter on that EP was probably the first song we ever rehearsed together as a full band. Infatua on was more in line with what we ended up doing on the album, re-recording Vengeance and what not. Actually, Misanthropic Emancipa on was supposed to be on that demo as well, but got lost in a computer crash as far as I remember. Both were recorded on minimal budgets, but got pre y good response.
7 What is the significance of the tle " THE DISMAL ASCENSION "?
It ' s a summa on of the lyrical themes on the album, as well as the overall tle for the four final tracks. The human race is deeply flawed, mentally and physically, but has an arrogant view of itself as masters of the earth and universe. Depar ng from this point of view, and looking at the flaws of humanity and the consequences hereof, is the theme of the album. In realising the flawed nature of humanity, and meaninglessness of existence, a higher point of enlightenment can be reached – a dismal ascension.
8 Who are the main songwriters in DEFILEMENTORY?
The album was wri en mainly by me, with riff contribu ons from Johnny. Everyone has their say on the song templates I present. Everything is wri en in Guitar Pro 5, it gives the best overview of all the parts, it all being pre y complex and fast, with a lot of harmonic and counterpunctal movement happening all over the place. Richardt fixes the drum parts from the template, and Simon plays all the leads. The lyrics were also wri en by me and Johnny.
Richardt and I also recorded an album for a chao c Black / Death project called Apparatus, which should be coming out soon. It around the style of Impetuos Ritual, with influence from obscure death and black metal, such as Arkhon Infaustus, Akercocke, Coffinworm, Dodecahedron and Ved Buens Ende. That album should be out next year.
10 Which type of music and bands do you listen to?
Well, I study musicology, and can ' t really afford to be picky and conserva ve within that field. I like both funk and disco, trance and EDM. Jazz and hip-hop. Extreme Metal and Classical are my favorites though. Metal-wise, I ' m mostly into experimental stuff that has it ' s own iden ty. Gorguts, Immola on, Ulcerate, Deathspell Omega, Dodecahedron, Portal, Impeteous Ritual, Ved Buens Ende, Wormed and Akercocke to namedrop some stuff. Classically, I ' m mostly the late roman c to modernist period, with some standout composers for me being Scöenberg, Debussy, Wagner, Lige, Penderecki and Shostakovich to name a few. Other than that, we are all huge fans of Steely Dan and Toto.
11 What future plans DEFILEMENTORY?
Once we ' re ready, you will know more. As of now, our plans are to pass our exams! A er that, to play more shows, get out to more people, drink more beer, and have more fun!
12 Is Final comment?
Thanks for reading along, and for suppor ng extreme music. Keep the flame burning!
9 What kind concert tour DEFILEMENTORY?, Any special? And How is the music scene in your area?
So far we ' ve only played in Denmark. We took part in the Wacken Metal Ba le here in Denmark, and went to the finals, but didn ' t get to Germany, which of course is sad, but Huldre, who won, probably was the be er fit for Wacken anyway, they play Folk metal, and are really good at it if you ' re into that kind of thing. We ' re looking into ge ng outside the danish borders this coming year, as we ' d really like to see how foreign crowds respond to our live show. The metal scene in Denmark is pre y stale, not much originality going on, only a few select death metal bands drawing a crowd, with Dawn of Demise probably being the biggest. We ' re kind of the bu of Scandinavia, metal wise, the Norwegian and Swedish scenes being so strong. Lately the underground has been spi ng out some great new stuff though in the hardcore / grind scene. Piss Vortex kick fucking ass, they ' re kind of Obscura era Gorguts meets Converge with an seizuring kid behind the drums. Some other really cool bands are Whorls, Serpent ' s Lair, LLNN, Hexis, and, if you ' re into really obscure old school death metal, Undergang. Simon is involved with a heavy / speed metal band called Encyrcle who are awesome as well. Richardt and Lars play in a band called Abscission, where they play a unique mixture of Deathspell Omega and The Black Dahlia Murder, I think that ' s the best descrip on. They have an album in the works, so look out for that.
