The alliance for clean water
BSAC HAS TEAMED UP WITH OTHER water-based sport National Governing Bodies ( NGBs ) to campaign for clean open water throughout the UK .
Launched in April , the Clean Water Sports Alliance was created in response to poor water quality and its impact on water-based activities .
According to recent reports , the UK has continued to score near the bottom of the European bathing water quality index . At the same time , only 15 % of rivers in England achieved good or above ecological status . Meanwhile , biodiversity is under immense pressure , threatened by pollution and invasive species that alter our ecosystems and introduce new pathogens , at an estimated cost to the UK of £ 4 billion a year .
BSAC is the latest NGB to join the founding alliance partners , Angling Trust , British Rowing , British Triathlon , Great Britain Outrigger , Paddle UK and Swim England to add a ‘ beneath the surface ’ dimension to the campaign work .
BSAC CEO Mary Tetley welcomed the opportunity to bring divers ’ and snorkellers ’
first-hand experiences into the Clean Water Sports Alliance .
“ Joining this group brings another dimension as we can report back on what is going on below the water while others can see what is going on the surface ,” she explained .
With the limited action currently being taken not making significant improvements , the Clean Water Sports Alliance is now campaigning for healthy and nature-rich blue spaces across the UK that can be enjoyed by all . Adequately funded regulators , creating a centralised information hub , and recognising all recreational water users across decisionmaking and policy are among the priorities the alliance is now calling for action on .
“ We will be looking to engage BSAC members in reporting pollution sightings when diving . This vital information will hopefully help lead to further and faster action against pollution , ultimately improving the health of our waters by 2030 ,” Mary added .

Setting the standard
BSAC ’ S SCIENTIFIC ADVISOR , GAVIN Anthony has been awarded a coveted British Standards Institution ( BSI ) Award , one of just 20 recipients to be awarded this year .
Gavin , who has played a key role within BSAC diver safety and represents the club within the BSI standards , was recently presented with a Standard Makers Award for his ‘ outstanding contribution ’ to the BSI ’ s underwater breathing apparatus committee .
The annual BSI awards celebrate those who have gone above and beyond to drive the production and implementation of standards in their fields .
Gavin said it was a tribute to the collective efforts made to ensure scuba diving remained a safe and enjoyable sport . “ I feel and hope it is a reflection on BSAC and the diving industry generally in that it recognises the efforts being made within the industry to improve diver safety .”
A member of BSAC since 1970 , Gavin spent 35 years in diving systems research
