THE WINNERS OF THE EIGHTH annual Torbay BSAC Splash-in underwater photography competition have been announced , with diver Malcolm Nimmo scooping two of the top awards .
Seventeen photographers submitted a total of 54 images after a full day of underwater photography in and around the South Devon coastline . Held at the end of June , there were four categories - Beginner , Compact Camera , Macro and Wide-angle – as well as the overall popular vote , chosen by attendees of the after-event dinner .
The Splash-in is organised by Torbay BSAC and is open to divers and snorkellers from across the South West Region . All photos have to be taken on the day around the Torbay area .
This year , Peter Rowlands , editor of Underwater Photography magazine , was the judge , who selected Richard Blair ( Beginner ), Tony Reed ( Compact Camera ), Malcolm Nimmo ( Wide-angle ) and Terry Griffiths ( Close-up ) as this year ’ s category winners . Meanwhile , Malcolm Nimmo ’ s image of a blue jellyfish was chosen as the People ’ s Choice top vote .
Torbay BSAC ’ s Tim Allen said the standard of this year ’ s entries was impressive .
“ While the weather conditions were better than last year , the underwater visibility was quite poor , presenting a challenge to the wide-angle photographers in particular . However , there are some excellent submissions that presented judge Peter Rowlands with some difficult decisions !”
The 2024 Torbay Splash-in was sponsored by O ’ Three , Teign Diving Centre and Dr Paul Naylor . This year ’ s competition also coincided with Torbay SAC ’ s 70th anniversary year .
