Green turtles vie for space on the reef wall
trip , I spent a great deal of my time in the first 10 metres as , let ’ s face it , that ’ s where all the light is !
The first thing you notice as you enter the water is the abundance of fish life . Thick shoals of red-toothed triggerfish and pyramid butterfly fish cover the walls , while large jacks hunt smaller bait fish . This is not a particularly sharky destination , but you may be lucky to see the odd small white-tip making its way up the reef , searching for its next meal .
Bunaken is also famous for turtles , which you will find all the way along the reef wall with massive sleeping green turtles and smaller hawksbills often eating the soft coral and sponges . I remember my first trip here many years ago and being wowed by the number of turtles we saw . These numbers just seem to increase every time I return . I would say there are now more turtles here than anywhere else I have ever been lucky enough to dive . We often gave up counting at about 20 turtles , with numbers possibly doubling that on many dives . Very often you would swim away from the wall and look back where you would see five or six turtles
