The wheel of the Irako Maru
not take away anything from it. Japanese wrecks litter the seabed, and with warm water and tropical fish, it’ s an experience everyone should try. There is a reason I’ ve been here three times and Chuuk only once.
The resort looks after your kit in many ways divers will find helpful. I don’ t mind carrying my kit and washing it, however, I won’ t stop the gracious team if they want to assist.
The great thing about Sangat is its size and location. There are only about 20 huts; it’ s 10 minutes from the wrecks, or about an hour from Coron Town. This means there is peace and tranquillity; there is little light pollution, so the stars and the moon are bright, bold and beautiful. Sitting on the terrace of our chalet, were able to watch the Milky Way in all its glory while listening to the sounds of the jungle.
Here, the bird song is incredible and then there is the weird tapping … on closer inspection it turned out to be a tribe of monkeys. These are local monkeys and you must not feed them. They are skittish and it takes time and patience to get a reasonable photo. However, monkeys must not distract from an early morning snorkel. The dawn here always indicates breakfast and fresh coffee, superfoods for any diver. I enjoyed a morning dip on a Maru before returning to join Heather for a snorkel and another dip on another Maru before lunch.

There’ s only so much enjoyment a nondiving partner can gain from you talking about diving. The snorkelling was great, however, there was one more trip / trick up
