Wrecks of Coron Bay

On September 24, 1944, the US Navy launched a devastating surprise aerial attack against a Japanese supply fleet hidden in Coron Bay, Philippines. Believing they were safely out of American aircraft range, the Japanese had anchored over a dozen supply ships, tankers, and auxiliary vessels in the secluded bay. However, Admiral William‘ Bull’ Halsey launched 120 Hellcat fighters and Helldiver bombers from US aircraft carriers located 340 miles away. In a swift and ferocious 20-minute raid, the American planes completely caught the Japanese by surprise, sinking 12 vessels including the Akitsushima Maru, Okikawa Maru and Irako Maru.
