inhabitants , and it ’ s classed as a city thanks to the 19th-century Nuestra Señora de La Paz Cathedral . I was based nearby at the elegant Hotel Catedral , its rooftop swimming pool commanding views over the adjacent Valesco Garden .
My diving took place with the Cortez Club , a long established dive centre owned by British expat James Curtiss . Each day , I was picked up by a smiling taxi driver and driven three miles up the coast to the centre , where daily briefings take place and divers are assigned panga boats for the day .
My visit took place in December , when there was a bit of wind and the dives had to be planned around it . Above all , I wanted to dive with sea lion pups , but the area has a rich variety of dive sites ,
