Mexico ’ s long peninsula on the Pacific coast , Baja California , is home to some of the eastern Pacific ’ s best diving . In a way , it is the spiritual home of Mexican diving , the place influential American filmmakers first ventured in the 1950s , drawn by the promise of big fish . For my first visit to Mexico , I focussed on two quite different settings along the southern side of the peninsula , the city of La Paz and the village of Cabo Pulmo .

La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur ( BCS ), known for its seafront promenade , the Malecón , with beaches , parks and sculptures . I loved it from the minute I arrived ; laid back yet vibrant , low key but welcoming . There are around 250,000
