Dom Robinson , BSAC ’ s Head of Diving and Training , welcomes a new generation of Open Water Instructors

Book your 2023 dive training

BSAC IS DUE TO RELEASE ITS programme of events for 2023 , designed to support members as they plan to continue their diver or snorkeller training development next year .
Members can book their 2023 instructor courses , which are already online . The diver progression and Skill Development Courses will follow a month or so afterwards . We ’ ll update you when they are online too .
Following the two-year pandemic hiatus , increasing numbers of BSAC members are looking to progress and develop their skills . Responding to demand , the 2023 programme of events will build on the success of 2022 and is aiming to facilitate more ad-hoc courses where needed . Members are invited to get in touch with their Regional Coach to discuss their 2023 training requirements so that regional training can be tailored to meet demand .
There will also be an increased focus on in-branch training , to support smaller clubs to access training more locally .
Meanwhile , there are still places on selected courses listed for 2022 , including the Instructor Foundation Courses scheduled for this autumn .
BSAC Diving and Training Advisor , Julia Branagan , said there are plenty of regional opportunities for members to progress their diving and snorkelling over the next 18 months .
“ If you are thinking about where your training can take you , look at what you can still do in 2022 , let us know what else you would like us to schedule and watch this space for 2023 events !”

AS HIGHLIGHTED IN LAST MONTH ’ S SCUBA , the first part of 2022 has been a bumper one for qualifying new instructors . The first six months have seen almost as many people gain Open water Instructor ( OWI ) status as the whole of 2021 , which is cracking news for our club . Particularly pleasing is that quite a few of these have qualified overseas .
Obviously , this doesn ’ t happen without a significant amount of work behind the scenes . Much of the administration is done by the Regional Teams and their Local Organisers , which allows the Instructor Training Scheme ( ITS ) staff to concentrate on delivering the best possible training . All are extremely dedicated volunteers , without whom the scheme simply wouldn ’ t happen .
Keen to build on this year ’ s success , we ’ ve already produced a training programme for 2023 and the events are now live to book on the website . People who like to plan ahead can now book their places , and I very much hope lots of you will take this opportunity .
A request for staff has also gone out to people qualified as Instructor Trainers ( ITs ) and it is hoped that they will be allocated to events in the near future . There is also the opportunity for people who aren ’ t ITs to support the ITS as Local Organisers . Not only will you be helping other BSAC members gain instructor qualifications , you ’ ll be able to see how the ITS works from the inside . If this is of interest then please contact your Regional Coach , who I ’ m sure will be pleased to hear from you .
