Kristina Pedder meets a growing BSAC club in which snorkellers outnumber diving members
This family friendly club , which has just celebrated 20 years as a BSAC branch , teaches the joyful leisure sports of snorkelling and scuba diving to the residents of Tameside , Greater Manchester . In a phase of growth now , especially on the scuba side , the club wants to become more active within the wider Tameside community and offer snorkelling and diving to those of all abilities . Under the club rules , all members new to the sport complete BSAC snorkel training before they learn to scuba dive .
How many members do you have ?
We have 40 members . We did lose a few during Covid , but membership is growing , in the summer we were gaining a new member every week . It hasn ’ t been easy but we are really chuffed with what we have achieved . We now have three permanent shore cover members – who stay dry – and 37 members active in the water , with a further five to join shortly . Fifteen are diving members and the rest , 22 , are snorkellers .
