Upbeat at the Show
BSAC ENJOYED A BUSY weekend at this year ’ s Go Diving Show , with faces old and new popping by to say hello .
Returning to the National Agricultural and Exhibition Centre ( NAEC ) in Kenilworth ’ s Stoneleigh Park for a second year , the Go Diving Show has become a key fixture in the UK diving event calendar . It is also the UK ’ s only consumer and trade event dedicated to scuba diving and dive travel .
Over two days in March , the Go Diving Show provided an interactive event for the whole family , showcasing the best of scuba diving and dive travel .
Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year , BSAC ’ s stand at Go Diving proved to be popular . The team were on hand over the whole weekend to offer diving , membership and training advice as well as join new members and hear more about what BSAC clubs have been up to . Several new BSAC Centres were signed up , along with some potential new kit partners .
BSAC also held its annual inter-agency meeting at the show , as well as a wellattended Diving Officer / Training Officer workshop , with 35 Branch Officers taking part . BSAC CEO Mary Tetley said the Go Diving Show was a positive experience all-round . “ The show ’ s atmosphere was very upbeat , and it was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves and enthusiastic about our sport .
“ BSAC is marking its 70th anniversary this year , and Go Diving was a great way to get together , meet members old and new , celebrate and look forward , for BSAC and for the diving sector as a whole .”

Meet Yasmine Thorn , BSAC University Coordinator and Council member
OH , I DO LOVE THE SEA ! LATELY , IT HAS been my mission to get more young people involved in scuba and help the ones who already dive get diving in the sea . As a member of Leeds University Union Sub Aqua , I have been quite fortunate to get out diving to all ends of the country in recent times . I ’ ve been from Shetland and Orkney down to Porthkerris in Cornwall .
Unlike some university clubs , ours is fortunate to have four active Advanced Divers and a host of Dive Leaders who are able to support and plan these wonderful trips . As BSAC ’ s University Coordinator , I have had the privilege of working with other university clubs , but I ’ ve also seen the difficulties they face . They can suffer from the three-year cycle of membership ; some lack experience with trip planning and site knowledge .
As part of our ongoing Uni project , we have created a new University Rep role for each region . Uni Reps will aim to expand networking between university clubs and their neighbouring branches and regional teams . This will allow clubs to better connect , learn from and progress with the support of the wider BSAC community .
We have appointed Uni Reps for most of the regions , but there are still vacancies in the Southwest , Scotland and Northern Ireland . Uni Reps will aim to create a network of clubs that are open and supportive toward younger divers , offering a welcoming reception to recent graduates and lasting support for universities in the area .
I hope to start seeing more young people out on our UK waters , diving our amazing sites - after all , that ’ s why we do it ! And if you see me out on the water , come along and say hi , and come dive with me !
