BSAC training is back in action
THIS YEAR HAS SEEN A FANTASTIC START TO BSAC ’ S Instructor Training Scheme ( ITS ), with extra courses scheduled to meet demand .
With a total of 35 ITS courses delivered between January and March , growing demand from around the regions has meant more courses are now being organised . Extra Instructor Foundation Courses ( IFC ) have already been scheduled in the South East region , while additional Open Water Instructor Courses and Practical Instructor Exams have been added for the North West .
BSAC HQ and the regional teams are also working to facilitate additional IFC events for clubs experiencing increased interest from members looking to move into instructing .
One bumper IFC recently hosted by Chester SAC saw 15 students from nine north west clubs complete the weekend to become Assistant Diving Instructors ( ADIs ). These new ADIs will now become an integral part of their club ’ s own instructor team , supporting try dives and diver training .
North West Regional Coach , Sam Clarke , said the IFC
was a successful effort between the clubs and the region . “ Congratulations to everyone who attended and many thanks to the North West regional instructors who provided an excellent course ,” she added .
BSAC ’ s ITS Coordinator , Jenny Mooney , said that she was seeing a renewed energy and interest in the Instructor Training Scheme , now that diving and training was steadily getting back on track , post-Covid .
“ 2022 has got off to a fantastic start for our instructor training . We have already added extra ITS events due to demand and events are filling up fast in certain regions .
“ We also want to be more flexible for clubs who are seeing more of their members wanting to become or develop as an instructor . And this includes organising bespoke ITS and IFC events . So , if you need help developing your club instructors , please get in touch .”

Lowestoft and the dive-fit challenge
MEMBERS OF LOWESTOFT SAC ARE taking on a ‘ 2022 Challenge ’ in a bid to get back to their pre-Covid dive fitness levels .
Inspired by Sports Diver trainee Julie Green , LSAC members are currently working through 22 challenges in 2022 , all designed to motivate their fitness goals and engage them in club diving .
Julie , who joined the club in 2019 , dreamt up the challenge as she planned her return to dive fitness post-Covid .
“ We had very little diving since Covid , and that has meant a reduction in both skills and fitness for most of us . I have been trying to get myself dive-fit , so I thought it would be nice to extend that to the other club members . And so , LSAC ’ s 2022 Challenge was born .”
Challenges include completing 22 dives , participating in a diver training course , swimming 22 lengths of the pool , and ‘ performing a voluntary act for the benefit of LSAC ’. There ’ s also a group challenge of 2,022 minutes of diving by the end of the year .
Julie said the 27 LSAC members had fully embraced the challenge .
“ Members are regularly attending pool sessions for swimming / fitness , and all seem positive in their outlook towards getting fit . Our Training Officer is also busier than ever with members wanting to finish off or refresh training .”
Julie hopes LSAC ’ s 2022 Challenge could now inspire other clubs .
“ The challenge is about getting members dive-fit and skills up to date , improving mental health , and increasing engagement . Our club is already reaping the benefits !”
