Nottingham Uni ’ s positive impression
DIVE DEEP BLUE MALTA RECENTLY hosted a group of 21 divers from University of Nottingham and I have to say it was an absolute pleasure . With a mixture of experienced , intermediate and relatively new divers , they worked as a team to achieve a fantastic week of diving for everyone on the trip . They are a great example of a BSAC Uni branch .
It was encouraging to see their eight experienced divers working alongside our instructor team to bring the rest of the group along within their current comfort zone . The result was a fun , enjoyable and safe week ’ s diving in what , at some sites , were challenging early season conditions .
They completed 10 shore dives ( including a night dive on a Second World War wreck ) over a five-day period that included wrecks , reefs and caverns . I was very impressed with the way the group managed to achieve the discipline required to dive safely , while providing the fun and enjoyment we all get as the reward for getting it right .
A trip to Gozo was a great day out , and although we couldn ’ t dive the Blue Hole due to extremely strong south-easterly winds , we made the best of it and completed two dives in the famous Inland Sea .
The night dive , a first for some of the divers , was another fantastic experience . Heading out late in the day , we first dived the wreck of the HMS Maori in the daylight hours then enjoyed a break and some refreshments on site as the sun set before returning to the wreck at night .
Throughout the week , me and my instructor team had the opportunity to observe the Nottingham Uni divers , and all agreed that the skill level of the group was impressive . It was obvious to me that they take their diver training seriously without losing the fun and camaraderie of sport . A perfect combination , and a pleasure to see .
A special mention for Jemima Watson ( Jem ) who organized the trip . It isn ’ t the easiest of tasks , but she managed to provide 21 divers a very enjoyable week away , so well done and you are welcome back anytime . I would like to mention that providing safe and enjoyable diving for large groups is something that requires a dive centre to be at the top of its game , keeping diver safety as its number one priority . This is something we constantly strive to achieve for our family of divers when they visit us here . JONATHAN THOMAS , Dive Deep Blue Malta
Yes , we have bananas
WITH REFERENCE TO THE ARTICLE ON PAGE 34 OF THE JUNE 2022 edition of SCUBA magazine [ Learning Curve : To pee or not to pee ]. I have dived extensively with Mr Warzynski over the years yet I have never once seen him use a banana in the course of his preparations . I recall him utilising a stick of celery once , prior to a dive in Shetland . On another occasion in Falmouth , a chantenay carrot was briefly employed . NICK LYON , Orkney and Elsewhere
