Reaching out to a new generation

THE FIRST SNORKELLING SESSIONS have been delivered at Stroud School as part of the new BSAC School Partnership Scheme .
Stroud School was the first to sign up to BSAC ’ s new school outreach initiative , which aims to get more schoolchildren into snorkelling , enjoying the outdoors and helping to protect the marine environment .
Seven BSAC instructors from clubs close to the school , including Aldershot Dolphins , Romsey SAC , and Southampton University , took part in the snorkelling sessions , teaching a total of 54 young participants aged 6-13 .
These new BSAC snorkel members are now looking forward to trying open water snorkelling over the summer , with many also interested in try dives and BSAC ’ s Discovery Diver course .
The scheme at Stroud School was so well received by parents that they have asked for a school snorkelling trip to the Isle of Wight during the summer holidays . Project coordinator , Mark Paisey , said the plan was to now link the Stroud School summer trip with BSAC ’ s Operation Oyster , which aims to document sightings of the UK ’ s endangered native oyster species .
Launched earlier this year , the BSAC School Partnership Scheme brings together local schools , BSAC centres and BSAC clubs to engage pupils in snorkelling . The initiative also has a strong marine environment focus , with the Marine Conservation Society providing teaching aids and online learning about protecting the oceans .
With 11 schools currently participating in the partnership , Mark said the project was also reaching out to other groups , including the Sea Cadets .
“ We have barely scratched the surface with this project , and it is very exciting . Not only are we growing the project , but we are reaching more young people , who are all future members of BSAC .”
