Free photo comp for marine conservation

ENTRIES ARE NOW OPEN FOR THE 2023 MARINE CONSERVATION Photographer of the Year competition , which is looking for images that powerfully portray the issues faced by our oceans and waterways .
Sponsored this year by the Save our Seas Foundation , the annual competition is organised by the Underwater Photographer of the Year ( UPY ) team and is free to enter . It is open to under and above water photographs taken in the UK and worldwide that highlight a marine conservation story or theme . Freshwater conservation images will also be accepted .
Chair of the judging team , underwater photographer and marine ecologist Dr Alex Mustard MBE , said the competition was a timely opportunity to highlight often ‘ unseen ’ marine conservation issues .
“ Powerful photographs can change hearts , minds and attitudes . Conservation imagery is especially important from the oceans , which faces many threats from our activities . However , these issues mostly happen unwitnessed , out of sight of land or beneath the surface . This contest gives these valuable images a huge public platform .”
The 2022 winner of the Marine Conservation Photographer of the Year title , Thein Nguyen Ngoc from Vietnam , scooped the award with his stunning aerial photograph of boats fishing for anchovies . The image has highlighted the issue of a 30 % decline in anchovy numbers over the past decade .
Dr James Lea , CEO of the Save Our Seas Foundation , said such images could have ‘ a profound capacity to affect how people view the world .’
“ At SOSF , we are all about encouraging positive change in how people view and interact with the marine environment . As such , we are delighted to partner with the Marine Conservation Photographer of the Year award , which is uniquely placed to highlight issues our oceans are facing and inspire change .”
The closing date for Marine Conservation Photographer of the Year entries is 7 January 2023 . For more information and to enter , go to www . underwaterphotographeroftheyear . com
