The Alba-Iulia

citadel

The star-shaped citadel in Alba Iulia dates back more than 300 years ago. The citadel was completely renovated a few years ago, and has been turned into a vivid place. One should not miss the change of guards when visiting it.

An important thing is that, right next to the citadel there is the “Unification Cathedral” and the “Unification Hall”.

In the Unification Hall in Alba-Iulia, on the 1st of December 1918, king Ferdinand of Romania, signed the Unification Treaty with Transilvania. This was a very old wish for all the Romanians in Romania and in Transilvania, and was the last step in forming the Great Romania.

The Unification Cathedral then became the cathedral where all the Romanian kings would be crowned when acceding the throne.
