History of
Student and Campus life
During the spring semester of 2010, then President John Broderick, concerned with the status and effectiveness of the Student Affairs division, initiated two actions that would ultimately result in the formation of Student Engagement & Enrollment Services. He hired Keeling & Associates, a higher education consulting and professional services firm, to conduct a study with the goal of determining how a new division could be structured to ensure, in President Broderick’ s words,“ no student falls through the cracks.” He then established the President’ s Advisory Committee on Student Success, consisting of members from across campus, with a charge of developing the final recommendations for the creation of a new division. This committee used the Keeling report along with numerous other sources and in August of 2010 provided the president with a recommendation to create Student Engagement & Enrollment Services along with its initial organizational structure. The committee also recommended creating a Student Success and Advisory Board, reporting to the President and cochaired by the Student Engagement & Enrollment Services Vice President and the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs to ensure the two divisions worked closely together in collaboration to support student success.
On March 1, 2011, Dr. Ellen Neufeldt started as the inaugural Vice President for Student Engagement & Enrollment Services and the division was officially launched. In July of 2011, the development of the division’ s first strategic plan began with the hiring of a consultant who led the process. A kickoff strategic planning retreat was held on August 3, 2011 with the theme,“ Creating a New and United SEES Team to Better Serve Students and Support Their Learning and Success!” The plan was developed throughout the fall 2011 semester and the 2012 – 2014 Division Strategic Plan was published in the spring of 2012. The initial strategic plan was updated throughout the fall of 2014 and the 2015 – 2020 Division Strategic Plan was published in the spring of 2015.
The first two strategic plans were organized around four founding principles or“ pillars” of the division: Recruitment, Engagement, Active Learning, and Student Success. These pillars were later expanded and modified to include Enrollment, Engagement, Inclusion, Learning, and Student Success. Each of these pillars represents a significant aspect of the division, its mission, and leadership.
