Drafting objectives
In September 2023, the strategic planning process kicked off with the formation of working committees, including coordinating, full, and subcommittees. The coordinating committee was charged to oversee the entire process. Meanwhile, the full strategic planning committee was intentionally nominated and selected to represent a diverse array of offices, experiences, and perspectives. This larger committee primarily operated through various subcommittees to make progress on different aspects of the plan. In addition to formal working groups, SCL Leadership Council and Cabinet, as well as subject matter experts were engaged throughout the process.
Stakeholder Engagement
Moving into October, efforts focused on engaging stakeholders to gather valuable data. This included conducting seven focus groups, with two sessions each for students, staff, and community members, including alumni, along with one session for academic affairs partners. Also, an initial survey yielded about 450 responses, with notable representation from students and teaching or administrative faculty.
Data Synthesis and Draft Plan
In November, a half-day retreat provided an opportunity to synthesize the information gathered from stakeholder engagement sessions. Additional data was also analyzed, including retention roadmaps, student surveys, and budget reports, to name a few. This laid the groundwork for drafting goals, which took place throughout December and into the new year. January saw the drafting of objectives, followed by the crafting of the vision, mission, and values in February.
