The KHSI Expo Program committee headed by committee chair Carl Ginapp of Iowa and Lee Wright of Virginia has announced plans for the 2013 Expo that will be held in Cookeville , Tennessee . This location is central to the membership of SCKA and an excellent chance to meet breeders from across the USA . It is also an excellent opportunity to learn more about sheep production . The program will include presentations and activities for beginning and experienced shepherds . All educational and sale events will be held at the Hyder Burks Ag Pavilion . We are looking forward to using this beautiful air conditioned facility managed by Tennessee Tech School of Agriculture . Thursday August 22 will kick off the Expo with a “ Sheep 101 ” course , a beginner ’ s level workshop designed for shepherds who want to learn or refresh their sheep production and management skills . Dr Will Getz of Fort Valley State University promises to bring an excellent group of professional educators to together teach us the basics of sheep production . There will be plenty of time for discussion that will allow you to bring those questions that you ’ ve been wondering about as you work in your fields and barns , but haven ’ t had time to look up or ask . The program on Friday August 23 will include more presentations on sheep management , selecting sheep , sheep health and record keeping . The morning will focus on “ Sheep 201 ” series and the afternoon will have a “ Sheep 301 ” for more advanced and in depth skill building . Watch for details of the educational sessions in the summer 2013 issue of the Katahdin Hairald or at the KHSI website at www . katahdins . org . KHSI ’ s annual membership meeting ( everyone welcome ) willoccur late Friday afternoon . Following a dinner that is included as part of the registration fee there will be an evening dessert social at the sheep facilities . The social will allow time to see the sale sheep brought from a variety of flocks across the USA and chat with their breeders . Saturday August 24 will begin with presentation of the sale sheep by class at 9 am . The 9th Annual National Katahdin Sale will begin at 11:30 am . With the Expo site located within reasonable driving distance of many Katahdin breeders , we expect huge interest in this sale . The Expo Sale Catalog will be available in July ( watch the website or let KHSI Operations know that you would like a copy by contacting us at info @ katahdins . org or 479-444- 8441 ).
