China's First Lunar Probe
41
The number of years it has been since the last human set foot on the Moon. The last manned lunar mission was Apollo 17. In comparison there has not been a lunar soft landing, or one that safely touches down on the surface, for 38 years. The last soft landing mission was with the Soviet Union's Luna-24.
China’s first probe on the moon: On December 2, 2013 China launched a probe which would eventually land on the moon and deploy a rover. The Chinese space program is one of only three programs which have successfully soft landed on the moon. The last landing on the moon was conducted by the old Soviet Union was in 1976. The probe landed in the middle of December and deployed its rover shortly after landing. The Chinese space program plans to use the rover to explore surface of the moon. The rover has the capabilities to run test on lunar soil up to 30 meters deep.
