One of the most commonly prescribed medications for bacterial infections is antibiotics. As unpleasant as they may be they are the most efficient in helping the body fight of the infection. (They do not have any effect on viruses only bacterial infections). Before the current modern day technology, and the progress we have made in developing medication, hospital beds would be full of patients that were suffering from blood poisoning as a result of cuts or scratches. All doctors could do was hope for the best, there was no known cure (or efficient cure) for bacterial infection.
