Music – Edexcel – 2MU01
Course Outline
There are three units of assessment: Performing Music, Composing and Listening and Appraising
Music.
The objective of the course is to enable candidates to enjoy and appreciate the benefits of being
involved in playing music, to encourage students in the making of music and composing skills and
to improve students’ understanding of music.
GCSE Music will encourage candidates to actively engage in the process of music study in order to
develop as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring
minds. They will be encouraged to develop their own musical interests and skills, including the
ability to make music individually and in groups and to evaluate their own and others’ music
understanding and appreciate a range of different kinds of music.
Course Details
Unit 1 – Performing Music (30% of total GCSE)
Unit 2 – Composing Music (30% of total GCSE)
Unit 3 – Listening and Appraising (40% of total GCSE)
Assessment Criteria
A range of skills will be assessed including a written examination as well as performance and
composing skills.
Career Prospects
Successful completion of this course will prepare students for AS or A Level Music.
There are many careers that involve music such as Teaching, Record Producing and Publishing, PR,
Performing, Hospitality to name but a few. An A Level in music would be very attractive for these
professions.
It is a requirement that students undertaking this course can either sing or play a
musical instrument.
