Choir
On 13 April 2011, the AHS Choir participated in the SYF Central Judging and clinched another Gold Award for the third time since 2007. Under the tutelage of their instructor Mr Terrence Toh, the choir performed three culturally distinct songs. The pieces range from a contemporary discordant piece by local composer Kelly Tang, a traditional Japanese song by Matsushita Ko, as well as a sacred piece by Randall Stroope. This challenging repertoire honed the choir’ s versatile ability to transit seamlessly between 3 divergent pieces and exposed the students to a wide range of works that spanned different genres, cultures and historical periods.
English Drama
On 4th April 2011, the AHS English Drama participated in the SYF Central Judging, attaining the Bronze Award. With Rebecca Tan of Class 4F as the lead actress, the drama group staged a production of the play“ How Did the Cat Get So Fat”? by local playwright Zizi Majid. Under the instruction of theatre practitioner Ms Chio Su Ping, members worked hard to dramatize a complex play that critiqued the social inequalities in Singapore’ s society. During the preparation process, they realised and appreciated the value of teamwork.
Guitar Ensemble
The AHS Guitar Ensemble clinched a Gold Award at the SYF Competition after a gruelling preparation process. Apart from having to perform 2 pieces of contrasting musical styles, the 40-member ensemble also had to master virtuosic guitar techniques their challenging repertoire demanded. This was also the first time in the history of the guitar ensemble that the majority of participants were beginners from Secondary 2. Nonetheless, under the tutelage of their instructor Mr Frankie Shi and the guidance of the Secondary 4 seniors, the ensemble’ s hard work paid off.
Concert Band
On the 7 April 2011, the AHS Concert Band participated in the SYF Central Judging. After months of exhausting practices, the band’ s hard work paid off when it managed to clinch the Gold Award— a prestigious honour awarded to only 18 schools this year. With its atmospheric interpretation of“ Danse Diabolique” and their lively rendition of“ The Singapore Flyer”, the AHS band managed to capture the hearts of the judges and audience alike with their heartfelt performances.
7-day cultural exchange trip to Osaka, Japan In November 2010, the AHS Concert Band embarked on a 7-day cultural exchange trip to Osaka, Japan. The objectives were to expose our students to world-class music-making by internationally renowned University bands as well as to experience Japan’ s rich culture and history.
