FORMER HAWK REUNITES WITH TEAM UPSTATE
JIM BABCOCK ‘66 hadn’t attended
an RCC basketball game for a half-
century, since his days wearing the
Hawks’ team jersey. That changed in
November when the RCC Sports Hall
of Famer noticed in the newspaper that
the men’s squad would be playing in a
tournament in Utica, not far from his
home.
Along with his wife, Babcock attended
the game, and witnessed the Hawks’
first win under new coach GRANT VALENTINE III, a 114-104
triumph over NY International Academy. Afterwards, Babcock met
and swapped stories with Valentine and members of his team.

Babcock certainly has many stories
to tell. He scored over 1,300 points
for RCC and earned All-American and
All-Region honors. After completing
his education at Eastern Montana
College, where he continued his
basketball exploits, Babcock moved
to upstate New York and became a
schoolteacher and coach. After his
retirement from teaching, Babcock
served as an assistant basketball
coach at both Utica College and Herkimer County Community
College. He was among the inaugural inductees into RCC’s Sports
Hall of Fame in 2008.
