Year 2 Year 2 have absolutely loved this terms topic; We are Britain. The children have explored Britain today and over the last 100 years, linking literacy to history, science, art and technology. The children have related their own experiences of growing up to those of their grandparents. We have enjoyed geographical map work, learning about the different countries that make up Great Britain and have worked hard on studying historically how things have changed in our country. The children have researched toys from the past, what were they made from, what games where played, shops and how the way we shop has changed and TV through time. Spot the difference! Children have looked at how old TV favourites have changed through time. Why does Postman Pat now use a helicopter and where have Bill and Ben’s strings gone? They have produced some fantastic observational pictures of old and new favourites. Year 2 really enjoyed sharing some of their learning when they did their class assembly this term; they took everybody on a sing-a-long history of Britain including songs such as, Pack Up Your Troubles, A Spoon Full Of Sugar, The Wobbles, Vindaloo football Anthem and the National Anthem. To complete the topic the children have explored the traditions of Christmas in this country. We have looked at what Christmas was like in the past, how it has changed and what is still the same. A very special experience, which really brought all this to life, was visiting St George’s Hall in Liverpool to take part in ‘The Secret of Christmas’. The iconic city landmark was a perfect place to discover and learn all about Christmas traditions by taking part in a special journey along the venue’s historic corridors and catacombs to find out what is the secret of Christmas.
