Year 1 We have had a very busy first term in Year 1 and have welcomed three new members to our class. Our topic this term has been Fire. We started the term looking at the origins of fire but quickly moved on to The Great Fire of London. While studying The Great Fire of London we found out all about where it started and how far it spread. We then performed our class assembly acting out all that we had learnt about The Great Fire. Zac was Samuel Pepys and made the audience laugh with his added extras! We then built London out of boxes and painted them to look like the buildings at the time of the fire. The children wanted to set light to them but Mrs Graham didn’t think that Mr McCoy would be happy! Our next step was a visit to the Fire Station which was a fantastic morning (you can read more about it in our trip report). After that we had an afternoon out in the woodland learning environment where we got to light some fires of our own and even eat some marshmallows. We had great fun using the fire strikers and even managed to put the fires out without having to call for the firemen! Fiery Dragons was our next area to study with us looking at and drawing our own. Then we heard the story about the four dragons who lived in China and helped the people to get water. In our science we have been out and about in the School grounds watching the changes that happen to the environment (and finding conkers!). We are now looking forward to preparing for all the fun we have at Christmas recording our song for the school CD and singing in the Christmas concert. As the term gets closer to Christmas we will be doing lots more activities linked to it, especially in Art and Craft. Hopefully with all that is planned in school for Christmas it will be a truly magical time for all the children in Year 1. Our Visit to Southport Fire Station Reported by: Tabitha Bell, Charlie Brazier & Oscar Wright We went on the minibus to Southport Fire Station. When we arrived we had to listen to the special emergency sound so that we could keep safe. We then looked all around the Fire engine and even sat in the driver’s seat (this was my favourite part - Tabitha). When Jacob pressed the pedal it made a wind sound! Next we all sprayed the hose (this was my favourite part – Oscar). Then the fireman picked someone to get dressed up (this was my favourite part – Charlie). Then we went upstairs into the meeting room and looked outside, what a great view! The firemen showed us a film all about how to keep safe in our own homes.
