Catering continued…
Year 11 Hospitality Event
Reported by: Mrs Robinson
Our Year 11 Catering pupils are
reaping the rewards of a threeyear GCSE course.
They finished most of their
Catering course by the end of Year
10, so have been using Year 11 to
earn another GCSE – this time in
Hospitality.
Over half of their course is to
investigate, plan, execute and
evaluate an event and, since
September, they have worked
extremely hard to achieve this,
culminating in a fabulous dinner at the
beginning of December.
The pupils chose to make their event a charitable occasion raising money for FareShare which tackles
the issues of food waste and food poverty. They named their event a “Meal for a Meal”, encouraging
customers to enjoy a meal themselves and, at the same time, raise money for other people to be fed.
They marketed the event themselves, attracting 56 customers for the three-course meal.
Pupils have been trialling dishes over the last few weeks so that
they could decide on an appropriate menu for the occasion. They
served a Soup of Roasted Butternut Squash, Chestnuts and
Bramley Apples with home-made Bread Rolls; followed by Pork
Loin Medallions with a Creamy Mushroom Sauce, Duchess
Potatoes and seasonal vegetables. For dessert, they served
Chocolate Torte with Caramel Brittle and Raspberries, then coffee
was served with home-made Petit Fours.
The teamwork amongst the nine pupils was fantastic, with all of them
helping to prepare food the day before and on the afternoon of the
event. During the event, five pupils took on the role of Front of
House staff to meet & greet customers and serve pre-dinner drinks
and the meal; whilst the other four pupils were privileged to use
the school kitchen and professional equipment to complete the
cooking of the meal.
Every single pupil stepped up to the mark and gave 110% effort;
they tackled the challenge of a live event for real customers and
were rewarded with glowing comments from their customers at the end of the
evening. Well done to the Year 11 Hospitality pupils!
