Catering
Reported by: Mrs Robinson
Catering has seen an expansion this academic year with all Middle School pupils taking
the subject. Years 5 and 6 have been learning about safety in the food room, including
using sharp equipment and the cookers.
They have made a number of products including Fruit Salad and Croque Monsieur or, as
it has been renamed by Year 5, "Croque Mr Shaw"!
Year 10 Catering pupils have recently carried out their first practical assessment, making
Afternoon Tea; and Year 11 have been busy preparing for their Hospitality Event in
December. In E3, pupils have taken part in the first Great Scarisbrick Bake Off
where they have learnt a number of decorating techniques ready for the Baking
Competition at the beginning of December.
Scarisbrick Hall Bake Off
Reported by: Mrs Robinson
This term saw the first Great Scarisbrick Bake Off take
place. Eighteen Middle School pupils have been
attending the E3 activity since September and have
learnt a number of cake decorating skills.
They have made chocolate run-outs and learnt
how to make feather patterns with dark & white
chocolate. They have practised their piping skills:
firstly with buttercream, then they learnt to write
with glace icing. Before Hallowe’en they made
chocolate spiders’ webs, which they then used
with orange icing to decorate fairy cakes. And, for
Remembrance Day, they made fondant poppies.
The term culminated with a Bake Off competition
where pupils were challenged to put their skills to
the test by creating and decorating a cake at home.
The judges were wowed by the creative flair shown
by pupils and genuinely had difficulty in selecting
a winning creation.
Eventually 1 cake was chosen as the winner
because of its attention to detail. Congratulations
to Ross Krige and to all the entrants fo ȁ
