As well as good friends in his settled home town in Texas , Garrett spends his European time in Andorra , where he has racer friends and training partners . “ I train with Jack Miller and Josh Hook , and there ’ s also Brad Binder and Darren Binder over there that I see every once in a while . But I mean , for the most part , like everybody kind of does their own thing until it ’ s like time to train but we train every day .”
Gerloff confesses to spending too much time on the couch at home but in reality he is big into hiking , nature stuff in general , mountains rather than beaches , and photography . Like properly into photography , albeit just for fun . “ I am pretty into it . It ’ s a hobby of mine and I spend way too much money on it - but that ’ s what hobbies are for , right ?”
He needs to stay in pro-athlete trim , and another of his interests in nutrition . And right now , he ’ s way out in one area of the science , eating mostly meats , almost no veggies and just one piece of fruit per day , honey as his only ‘ carb ’ intake … “ I live on the extremes ,” he said . “ I can maintain like a pretty ridiculous body fat percentage and still feel like I have really good energy , stamina and everything . When I do that kind of diet my blood work looks freaking awesome , really .”
Being the only American in WorldSBK in 2022 has made Gerloff an exotic specimen from day one , but he actually felt more pressure in year one . Race results have been more difficult to find since then , although he is sometimes fastest of all in a practice session , then a midfield finisher in the races . And there were a several crashes last year that got him noticed for the wrong reasons . It has all caught up to him a bit , it seems .
Gerloff ’ s international racing future in unclear at time of press , but we can safely count on him swinging hard when he gets in the ring at Magny Cours this weekend . mode : “ Je ne sais pas pourquoi je te détestais autant avant !”. On est maintenant super proches . »
Quand il n ’ est pas avec ses amis au Texas , Garrett occupe son temps en Europe en Andorre , où il a des amis pilotes et des partenaires d ’ entraînement . « Je m ’ entraîne avec Jack Miller et Josh Hook , et je vois aussi Brad Binder et Darryn Binder de temps en temps . Mais la plupart du temps , chacun fait sa vie jusqu ’ au moment de s ’ entraîner , mais on s ’ entraîne tous les jours . »
Gerloff avoue passer trop de temps sur le sofa , mais en réalité , il adore la randonnée , la nature , la montagne plutôt que la plage et la photographie . Un vrai passionné de photographie , même si c ’ est juste pour le plaisir . « C ’ est un de mes passe-temps et je dépense beaucoup trop d ’ argent pour ça … Mais c ’ est pour ça que sont faits les loisirs , non ? »
Il a besoin de rester dans la forme d ’ un athlète professionnel , et un autre de ses intérêts est la nutrition . Et pour l ’ instant , il n ’ est pas dans les clous de la science , mangeant principalement de la viande , peu de légumes et un seul fruit par jour , le miel étant son seul apport en glucides … « Je vis dans les extrêmes . Je peux maintenir un pourcentage de graisse corporelle très faible et avoir quand même l ’ impression d ’ avoir beaucoup d ’ énergie , une bonne endurance et tout . Quand je fais ce genre de régime , mes analyses sanguines sont vraiment bonnes . »
Être l ’ unique pilote américain en WorldSBK a donné à sa présence un caractère exotique dès le premier jour , mais Garrett sentait plus de pression lors de sa première année . Les résultats ont été plus difficiles à décrocher depuis , même s ’ il est parfois le plus rapide d ’ une séance d ’ essais , puis en milieu de peloton en course . Plusieurs chutes l ’ ont fait sortir du lot pour de mauvaises raisons l ’ an dernier . Il semble que ça l ’ ait un peu atteint .
Le futur de Gerloff sur la scène internationale reste à définir à l ’ heure où sont écrites ces lignes , mais on peut compter sur lui pour tout donner chaque fois qu ’ il entrera en piste à Magny-Cours ce week-end .
