EXCITING CONTENT take for granted . In and around Magny-Cours , you are thinking global but always eating and drinking local . The Loire Valley is truly world famous as a wine-producing region , and high quality wine at that . Among many of the great wine regions of France , it has its own special names … Sauvignon Blanc , Chenin Blanc , Cabernet Franc and one that should be spoken in reverential tones … Sancerre .
Back to the track itself , Magny-Cours is a true place of regular pilgrimage nowadays for WorldSBK fans in particular . Given that there is a French MotoGP™ race in Le Mans , and the classic Bol d ’ Or 24-Hours EWC championship moved back to Le Castellet / Paul Ricard in 2015 ( after sharing Magny-Cours with WorldSBK for some time ), WorldSBK is the biggie for Magny-Cours . And the French fans seem to just love it . Partly because being in the absolute centre of France , any and all of them have the chance to make the journey . It is the most egalitarian of all French circuits that way .
We used to visit Magny-Cours at what sometimes felt like the beginning of winter , and sometimes we paid the price for it wet or foggy morning conditions . But whatever the weather , or the fortunes of the best French riders in the major classes , the crowds have regularly come , filled the grandstands in many places , and brought a certain je ne sais quoi , to the whole event .
We have had a lot of championships decided at Magny-Cours over the years , because of that late season finish , which was one compensation for the fits and starts of the weather gods . Many a new champion has looked at the big chequered flag-inspired grandstand across from the pitlane entry and shed tears of joy . And the other riders … maybe they experienced tears of a different kind .
Now , with WorldSBK being held there in early September we can reasonably hope for even some warm temperatures and golden sunshine to underline the joy of racing once again in France . The 4.411km long circuit layout itself follows the local hilly topography in places , and features entire sections inspired and named after corners and curves at other historic racing venues all over the world .
The Nürburgring chicane is one . The front brake crucifixion area of the 180 ° tight right called Adelaide hairpin is a popular overtaking spot . Always an unintended drama right there . The Estoril curve is a long , long right hander - after the finish line exit onto the Grande Courbe left . Mimicking the final curve at Estoril , it leads onto one of Magny-Cours ’ many notstraight / straights . Undulations feature heavily at Magny-Cours , most gentle but noticeable , but the drop down exiting the Chateaux d ’ Eau is a testing curved drop down a low level ski-run .
But maybe the most history making or breaking place at Magny-Cours is the final Lycée complex . A hard right 90 ° -plus hairpin , very quickly followed by a real flip-flop right-left onto the short main straight ( and even shorter run to the finish line ), has ended many an ambition for a race or championship win . It can be tricky , very tricky , for riders to defend their track position there . And being right in front of the pits , Race Control and the main grandstand , every sketchy move is analysed in real-time . As a theatre of dreams and nightmares , that final chicane is world class .
Fitting then that the WorldSBK championship is coming to town once again , to a modernised yet truly classic French circuit with its own character and personality . And yet , every time we come to Magny-Cours , it is the spectators who seem to make it all extra-special on the day .

Pour en revenir au circuit , Magny-Cours est aujourd ’ hui un lieu de pèlerinage , notamment pour les fans du WorldSBK . Étant donné que l ’ épreuve MotoGP™ en France se tient au Mans , et que le Bol d ’ Or est retourné au Castellet / Paul Ricard en 2015 ( après avoir été organisé à Magny-Cours pendant un certain temps ), le WorldSBK est le grand événement de Magny- Cours . Et les fans français semblent l ’ adorer . En partie parce que la piste étant située au centre de la France , ils ont tous la possibilité de venir . En ce sens , c ’ est le circuit le plus central du pays .
On avait l ’ habitude de venir à Magny-Cours lors de ce qui semblait parfois être le début de l ’ hiver , et on en a payé le prix avec des conditions humides et brumeuses le matin . Mais peu importe la météo ou les résultats des meilleurs pilotes français , le public est régulièrement venu , remplissant de nombreux gradins , et apportant un certain je ne sais quoi à l ’ événement .
Beaucoup de titres ont été décidés à Magny-Cours , en raison de sa présence tardive dans le calendrier , ce qui a permis de compenser les caprices de la météo . Beaucoup de nouveaux Champions ont pleuré des larmes de joie en arrivant devant la grande tribune en face de l ’ entrée de la pitlane . Et les autres ont peut-être connu des larmes … différentes .
Le WorldSBK s ’ y rendant maintenant début septembre , on peut raisonnablement espérer des températures plus chaudes et des rayons de soleil . Le tracé , long de 4,411 kilomètres , suit la topographie locale , vallonnée à certains endroits , et comporte des parties inspirées et nommées en référence à des virages d ’ autres circuits de course historiques dans le monde .
La chicane Nürburgring en est une . Adelaïde , une épingle à droite serrée à 180 °, est un célèbre lieu de dépassement . Après la ligne d ’ arrivée , on passe dans un gauche nommé Grande Courbe puis on arrive dans la courbe Estoril , un très long virage à droite . Imitant le dernier virage d ’ Estoril , elle mène à l ’ une des nombreuses lignes droites pas vraiment droites de Magny-Cours . Les ondulations , pour la plupart douces , mais qui se font sentir , sont très présentes à Magny-Cours . Mais la descente à la sortie de Châteaux d ’ Eau , éprouvante , est inclinée telle une piste de ski .
L ’ endroit de Magny-Cours où s ’ écrit le plus l ’ histoire et le meilleur pour les freinages est sans doute le Lycée . Une épingle à cheveux à plus de 90 °, suivie d ’ un droite-gauche très rapide avant la courte ligne droite des stands , où des courses et des championnats ont été décidés . Ça peut être très , très délicat pour les pilotes de défendre leur position ici . Et comme vous êtes juste en face des stands , des bureaux de la Direction de Course et de la tribune principale , chaque manœuvre est analysée en temps réel . Une chicane de renommée mondiale , source de rêves pour les uns , de cauchemars pour les autres .
Il est donc normal que le Championnat WorldSBK vienne une fois de plus ici , sur un circuit français modernisé et pourtant classique , qui a son caractère et sa personnalité . Et pourtant , à chaque fois que nous venons à Magny- Cours , ce sont les spectateurs qui semblent rendre l ’ événement encore plus spécial .
