The main design is the Ying and Yang of the koi fish on top . It is self-explanatory ; good and evil . The original design from 15 years ago was angel wings and devil tails - good and bad - like a split personality . The koi fish idea , from about 2019 I think , represent one fish swimming against the stream and the other fish swimming with the stream . The good times and the bad times - but in the circle of life it all flows together . That ’ s why it is red and blue , the two fish swimming in two directions . It is very zen , very Japanese from the design side . I have always had a split helmet design , with me being a gemini . And you can buy this design as a replica .”

The design of the helmet paint job is heavily inspired by an Australian surfer from Byron Bay called Torren Martyn . He is an artist but also a surfer , an accomplished surfer in his own right . He was really cool about it because he could have put his name to that kind of tropical pattern , could have said ‘ no , that is my trademarked pattern ,’ but he was like , ‘ I ’ m honoured .’ I had another tweaked up version of it last year , and I am really happy with it . The Starline graphics guys are really good at what they do and they did really well with the design they came up with last year . That ’ s why I will use it for another year , because they did such a good job of it . I always think crash helmets are special in terms of riding kit , and they do a good job too ! But it is the one thing you can put on a shelf at home and it just kind of fits in . A helmet looks like it should be there , like an ornament .”

Honestly there ’ s not a big thing behind the new helmet design . Starline painted it for me and I told them I wanted a Texas theme on there . They put the Texas star and a bull head on it , which maybe means I ’ m strong like a bull or something . Really , I just wanted to make it obvious where I had come from and I think they did a great job . It ’ s an expression of my country , it ’ s probably not the most personal piece of kit actually ! The little licence plate that I ’ ve stuck on my leathers for this year , I would say is the most “ hands-on ” thing I ’ ve done to represent my personality .”

Yes , I have a new design for this year . Fortunately , I have some sponsors that help me in this competition , so it is important to me to put the logos on the helmet . The colour is because I like yellow things so much . I have a yellow car , shoes , clothes . When I am at home I must walk around looking like a banana . I use this design because I like yellow so much . It is not because I am such a big Valentino Rossi fan - a little bit - but no it is just the colour yellow . This new one is ‘ fluoro ’ ”
