LEANDRO ‘ TATI ’ MERCADO

My father speaks a lot to me during the season , about all the races . He is far away and I live by myself in Italy . He is close and sometimes it is not like a father-and-son relationship . He is like a friend who gives me some advice . Also I work with a sports psychologists / coach . He is Gustavo Ruiz and I started working with him this year . About motivation , how to approach things .”

In the early days the biggest mentor was probably my dad . I have not really had many mentors , but I guess you could say in recent years it has been Fabien Foret . and Andrew Pitt when I first joined the world championship . Even though he never acted in a mentor or coach role - he was actually a team-mate - I took a lot of inspiration from Andrew . He did everything right and I learned a lot from him .”

ALEX LOWES

I have been very fortunate to have had a lot of good advice during my career . Early on Ron and Leon Haslam were great at helping my brother Sam and me . I would say the most influential person later in my career is Neil Hodgson . He ’ s also my personal manager . He ’ s been there and done it so can relate very well to a lot of situations . It ’ s hard to give one piece of advice that ’ s meant the most to me . Also I have to say Sam would be the overall most influential person on me . We speak every single session either of us do , we really try to learn from our own and each other ’ s mistakes . We have such a close relationship and it ’ s amazing to be able to share racing together . Our whole thing is just about doing the best you can do , from training off the bike , having the right mentality through to understanding the bike set up and then racing . Always make sure you ’ re looking to improve yourself , apart from this we just always tell each other the famous line - ‘ enjoy it !’”
