You are cordially invited to the launch of the Sawbridgeworth Local History Society ’ s first book on Friday 26th October at 1900 at the Hailey Centre , 18 Bell Street , Sawbridgeworth , CM21 9AS ( off the Bell Street Car Park ) Produced to coincide with the centenary of the end of the Great War , it tells how Sawbridgeworth and High Wych were affected by that tragic conflict . It was written by Elizabeth Waugh , Douglas Coe and Theo van de Bilt and edited by David Royle , all Society members .
At the heart of the book is a spreadsheet with as complete a listing of local fallen as can be compiled after 100 years . The authors identified quite a few soldiers who are not mentioned on the war memorials in either Sawbridgeworth or High Wych .
At the launch ceremony for the book the authors and editor will speak , a slide show will be presented and people will be able to buy the book at the special pre-publication price of £ 10 . The published price will be £ 12.50 .
Pre-publication orders can be made on the Sawbridgeworth Local History
Society website at https :// www . sbwhistory . com / the-great-war
After publication the book will be on sale at a number of local outlets as well as of course directly from the Society .
The book tells a number of soldiers ’ stories , both of those that perished and those that survived . There ’ s the story of Johnny Holden who died on the first day of the battle of the Somme and his sweetheart Frankie . There ’ s the tragic story of a man who committed suicide on the railway near Spellbrook . There ’ s the story of the Herts Regiment at Passchendaele . The role of women is discussed , both those at home and those who went abroad , like the three Nottage sisters , who served as nurses in France . There is an article about two local prisoners of war , one that perished and one that survived .
Research for the book has been lengthy and intensive . In fact , the authors produced so much material that not all of it could be included in the book . This is particularly true of the soldiers ’ stories . That is why on the Society ’ s website there is a separate 75-page long article ( by Douglas Coe ) which tells 149 soldiers ’ stories in neat alphabetical order , thus making it possible for local families to find their own relative . THE FLYER | OCTOBER 2018
Hatfield Heath Cricket Club recently celebrated the 150th anniversary of the first recorded match against another village side . In 1868 , the Heath played Hallingbury and won by 121 runs . On 8th July , a day of cricket was held to commemorate the occasion .
Starting the day were two games of junior cricket between sides from Hatfield Heath and Little Hallingbury . This time the visitors avenged the historic defeat by a narrow margin .
In the afternoon , past and present players gathered for a match between sides captained by current club skipper Mark Graves and Chairman Michael Briscoe . The day was graced by
glorious weather and a fast outfield . Consequently , it was a day for the batsmen . In a 40 over match , nearly 500 runs were scored , with the Captain ’ s team winning by just four runs .
Tea was served between the innings with special cakes decorated with the club badge , a bar was on hand serving drinks and a barbecue kept players and spectators well fed .
As well as the match there was plenty of time for reminiscing about the past and looking forward to the future .
The club plays league games on Saturdays and friendlies on Sundays .
New players are always welcome . Please visit www . hatfieldheathcc . co . uk
