Hostis Parthia
Shortly after Emperor Nero’s succession to the thrown the Roman Kingdom of Armenia’s prince was over thrown and replaced by a Parthian prince. This was ultimately a Parthian invasion of Roman territory. The new prince was very young and Rome worried about how he would react to this situation. Nero did not hesitate and immediately sent troops to the region of Armenia being conquered. As a result the Parthians relinquished control to the Romans. This peace was only temporary and full scale war broke out in 58AD. The Parthians refused to withdraw their army from Armenia and instead began a full scale invasion. Luckily Rome was able to repel most of the enemy army. Nero was praised for his heroic deeds. However in 62AD Armenia invaded the Parthian province of Adiabene. Again the two empires plunged into war until 63 AD. Parthia then began to make attempts at attacking Syria another Roman territory, but Emperor Nero did not want to continue fighting and opted for a peace deal. The deal stated that the Parthian king’s brother would become the Armenian King crowned by Nero himself. Nero crowning the new Armenian King showed the Parthians the immense power that both Rome and Nero held. This peace deal of 63 AD gave Nero much political praise and helped the Roman people gain a little trust in him.
