12 2024 Farm Family Salute June 2024 on the farm, you learn how to work on everything, that’ s just part of growing up on the farm,” he said.
“ It’ s still a family operation. It has to be,” said Burns.“ One of the largest problems we have is finding help. We continue to rely on each other to continue to keep this thing rolling.”
The Burns Farm is built around an effort to change the typical process for running a cattle operation by focusing on efficiency, sustainability and humane animal treatment. In turn, cattle on the farm are grass fed and pasture raised. The result is a product that includes a blend of high-end cuts of beef, including filet mignon, ribeye, sirloin and tenderloin, mixed into premium ground beef that is sold online and is also available for local pickup.
According to the farm’ s website Farmer Jack( www. farmerjack. com), the quality of the beef they sell is superior to the standards set by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. In addition, the site mentions that the Burns Farm has developed an operational model that allows it to operate at higher efficiency without producing waste.
“ The thing that draws me to farming is sustainability,” said Burns.“ As food prices go up, our goal is to try to find a more sustainable, better product that benefits both the consumer and the grower.”
Although Burns doesn’ t think of his farm place as a Century Farm, it certainly has all the hallmarks of the designation based on the number of generations that have run it.“ We’ re six generations in this county,” he said.
The goal at Burns Farm is the mantra held by most farmers: Feed the nation, feed the world. And if it can be done with a little less waste, Burns is all for it. That’ s why he’ s in the game.
