Homer said with pride.“ It’ s been a wonderful thing, and it keeps his memory alive.” Looking back, Bowling said his time in the Army helped shape who he became.“ It made me appreciate home and our country,” he said.“ I didn’ t want to go at first, but once I did, it was good for me. If a young person goes in, I’ d tell them to make the best of it and do what they’ re told. You’ ll come out a better man than you were when you went in.”
Now 91 years old, Bowling lives at Village Heights in London, where he says he’ s“ thankful for three good meals a day and
good people around.” His greatest joy comes from his family— his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.“ The highlight of my life is going to see my great-grandson play soccer,” he said with a smile. Bowling has been married for 67 years to his wife, Sarah, whom he calls“ about the best thing that ever happened to me.” A retired educator, Sarah taught at London Elementary School for 29 years. Together they raised two children— Ed Bowling, a hospice nurse in Laurel County, and Beth Ann Hensley, a retired speech therapist and teacher.
Faith has guided Homer Bowling throughout his life. A lifelong member of the Faith Christian Church, he says his beliefs have anchored him. | PHOTO BY MADISON NANTZ
