Arts & Entertainment Chris King, Gosford City Council’s Arts and Entertainment Manager It is with great pleasure that I accept an invitation from Salt Central Coast to inform readers of some outstanding Arts and Entertainment activities being performed or exhibited at venues proudly owned and operated by Gosford City Council. Over the coming months at Laycock Street Community Theatre at North Gosford we celebrate a virtual smorgasbord of theatrical production. Performers’ talent, craft and skills will be showcased superbly as our new $150,000 sound system creates maximum impact for audience’s audio senses. that have made the band and its music what it is today, carving out a special place in the popular music history of Australia and New Zealand. Other shows from March – July include tributes to Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, Stevie Wright, Buddy Holly, The Who? And Johnny Cash. Saturday 26 April 2pm & 8pm and Sunday 27 April 2pm Jally Entertainment presents the professional live touring production of Calendar Girls. Based on the true story of eleven Women’s Institute members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund, Calendar Girls opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre and has since become the fastest selling play in British theatre history. Of course many will know this story from the 2003 movie starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters. Part of the proceeds from the royalties of this production will be paid to Leukemia and Lymphoma Research. The Gosford Regional Gallery at Caroline Bay is proud to present a number of significant exhibitions throughout Autumn. Particularly exciting is Paul Kelly & The Portraits, a touring exhibition developed by the National Portrait Gallery. Regarded by many as the Australian people’s poet, these portraits, selected from a range of artists and leading photographers, provide insights into the complexities of Kelly’s persona. The exhibition also features a collection of short films which explore the relationship and connection between Paul Kelly and three iconic Australians: Donald Bradman, Archie Roach and Vincent Lingiari There are a myriad of tribute shows touring in 2014 and Laycock Street Community Theatre will host some of the best, however there is no substitute for the real thing and on 11th of April at 8pm The Harbour Agency Present Dragon - The Trilogy Concert Tour. Unlike many bands, there are three distinct ages that define the evolution of iconic rock band Dragon. The eras represent the rites of passage Through May and June the Gallery celebrates Indigenous culture with the annual Reconciliation competition and the exhibition You Call it Desert, We Used to Live There. This exhibition is a selection of vibrant felt-tip pen drawings by Jimmy Pike that bring the artist’s country in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia into glorious relief through renderings of spirit beings, flowers, stars and earthscapes. The works draw on the knowledge and skills Pike learnt as a boy growing up in the hunting-gathering tradition of his family in the desert. His intimate knowledge of his country is translated through the varying styles and themes. The Japanese Gardens adjacent to the Gosford Regional Gallery will come alive in the upcoming School Holidays with children searching for the Long-Nosed Potoroo who is helping to save Easter. Term 2 art classes for adults and after school classes commence at the beginning of May. 6
