Executive summary Mandate 6: Knowledge and information sharing The sixth mandate on which SALGA acts is as the custodian of knowledge and information sharing. SALGA conducted a baseline survey to identify the service authority research support needed by municipalities to effectively fulfil their functions. The resulting report was used to concretise the relevant support for municipalities and develop a support programme with implementation phases. The launch of the local government knowledge hub is a significant step in the improvement of the management of SALGA and the sector’s knowledge resources. The outcome over time of the hub is to build a body of knowledge (institutional memory) that will serve as the local government reference source for the future. The Knowledge Hub accessible on the SALGA website The SALGA municipal barometer provided data and intelligence support to a number of stakeholders. Several socio-economic profiles have been developed and shared with end users. It is envisaged that the outcome of the municipal barometer will be to provide socio-economic profiles with the necessary information and intelligence to enable informed discussions and decision making processes. 20
